Newsroom Travel What’s new for you in ’23-24: The East

East coast ski resorts are getting quite a lift with plenty of new updates, upgrades, and projects. This makes for good news for skiers and snowboarders on the east coast this winter as the ski season gets closer. Read on for more of what’s new at east coast ski resorts this winter.

New Hampshire Ski Resort Updates

New Hampshire’s historic Black Mountain announced in early October that it would not be opening for the season, only for Indy Pass to come to the rescue just days later. Indy’s parent company, Entabeni Systems, agreed to provide the necessary resources to keep the independent hill, located in Jackson, open for the 2023/2024 season.

Ragged Mountain, located in Danbury, is getting a new lift to replace the Barnyard Triple haul rope. Its opening day is scheduled for December 1, weather permitting. To celebrate opening day and a new partnership with Blackstrap, Ragged Mountain is giving the first 50 people in line a complimentary co-branded Blackstrap neck tube.

Updated snowmaking systems have been put in place at resorts across New Hampshire, including Mount Sunapee. The resort upgraded its tower guns to produce snow more efficiently and in a more eco-friendly capacity. They also updated their lodges and added webcams to the base and summit. New Hampshire’s only ski-through lighthouse will also be built to pay homage to Lake Sunapee’s three iconic lighthouses in the area.

The new Timbertown Doppelmayr fixed grip quad at Loon Mountain was completed late this summer. The lift will serve novice and intermediate terrain as part of the resort’s South Peak expansion. Construction on the expansion is set to continue as they prepare for opening day.

Cranmore Mountain Resort is opening a brand new 30,000-square-foot base lodge with expanded guest space, retail shops, and dining options. The Fairbank Lodge is set to open at the beginning of the season along with a newly built terrain park.

Finally, in Massachusetts, Berkshire East will be installing its first new detachable chairlift at the base. The Leitner-Poma quad will take guests up to Horace’s Grove via the Competition trails.

Maine Ski Resort Updates

At Sunday River, construction continues on the new Barker 6 High Speed Chairlift. Due to this, the resort has pushed the opening day area over to Jordan to ensure the project’s completion. Sunday River was also one of the first to turn their snow guns on for the season, firing them up in early October. View projected opening dates here for ski resorts around North America.

Sugarloaf‘s plans continue on with its 2030 plan, which sees new lifts in a western expansion of territory, opening up approximately 120 new acres of trail for beginners and intermediates.

Vermont Ski Resort Updates

While a little further out, skiers and riders have a new lift to look forward to at Sugarbush Resort, which is set to replace the Heaven’s Gate chairlift starting in the Spring of 2024. The triple will be replaced with a fixed grip quad as part of a $12.6 million improvement package. A reverse traverse is also being added to the mountain to connect Heaven’s Gate to the lower mountain Valley House Quad. On the Mount Ellen side, the Poma detachable quad will be replaced with an updated detachable chairlift.

New York Ski Resort Updates

Holiday Valley, located in Ellicottville, has spent the summer working on upgrades that are a part of a $9 million improvement initiative. A new 6 Pack High Speed Chairlift is replacing the Mardi Gras High Speed Quad, while the resort has added a new PistenBully 600 snow groomer and other snowmaking system renovations. Additionally, the Inn at Holiday Valley has begun a three-year renovation project.
