A ski resort's overall star rating displayed here is not calculated based on a simple average but takes several factors, including the age of a review, into account.
I have been going to Whitetail since its opening just a couple times each season. Today, 1-22-24, will be my last. It is an easy 2 hour drive from Virginia for me and with all the new fresh snow I figured conditions to be great. But again, AS ALWAYS this staff does not seen to know how to groom slopes. This has alway been my #1 gripe with Whitetail. Maybe they do not have the proper equipment, I do not know but moving forward I will go to tried and true resorts in WV and Western Pa. Today was the final straw for this carver….

The customer service was incredible. I almost immediately lost my ticket and was able to get a quick replacement no hassle. The staff here are extraordinarily friendly!
One of my friends was learning how to ski for the first time, and there were some excellent beginner trails for her to start on. We went mid week for a college ski night and didn’t have to wait in lines to get on the lifts, which was a huge benefit. The mountain is small, but for the area has a great mix of trail offerings.

The beginner mountain area(around the lift-off quad) was open and fine, the area around the easy rider quad was mostly closed, the bottom half of Snowpark was closed, as well as sidewinder and ledgewood. Stalker was open though. On the big mountain, most runs were closed, only fanciful and Angel drop were open. Drop In was also open but fairmount was not. I think Homerun will be open today, it was almost ready, and ridge runner had some great skiing if you go up in to the forest area. Best resort within 1.5 hours of DC

The lift lines were completely disorganized. Hundreds of people funneling into one lift with only one staff member managing the line at the very front. I waited in the singles line for 25 mins without moving at alll before I gave up and moved to the back of the main line—only to find out that the singles line was not functioning at all. The back of the line was a free for all with no structure. I’ve skied around the US and globally for 45+ years, and this was the worst experience I’ve had in a lift line. I can’t imagine what it would have been like with small children.

Whitetail, in general, draws a large crowd due to it's convenient proximity to several mid-Atlantic cities; however, does not have the infrastructure to support the volumes of people it is willing to accept. Archaic rental retrieval processes leave dissatisfied skiers/boarders waiting in lines that wrap around buildings (I've heard up to two hours). Two converging lift lines at the base create a giant cluster of people not knowing where they should go. A centralized location for food at the base creates more lines and cluster. A mid mountain (where the green and blue runs converge) or summit dining option would significantly address the clustering and spread people around. I will say that the staff I encountered was absolutely exceptional.
The really applaud the layout of the mountain and how it's separated between beginner, intermediate, and expert. It does keep lifts moving along with lift staff organizing the front. Grooming quality was sub-par, one of the intermediate trails we continued to avoid because there were golfball sized pieces that covered the mountain. Runs were scraped off by 2-3 pm on a Saturday.
I come in with a more strict review because this is an Epic owned mountain and it's disappointing to see the lack of effort put into an opportunity to convert mid-Atlantic skiers into Epic pass holders.

Went here with a few friends, two of which rented skis. After waiting for 45 minutes to get our tickets, our friends waited another 2.5 hours to get their rentals. Staff is rude as well from personal experience. There is a decent variety of trails here and they are well maintained.

conditions from 4pm to 10pm were not ideal. Frozen snow that melted around need was not nice to ride on.

Most vertical within two hours. They work very hard to keep whole mountain open, but they like to advertise packed powder even when it's not. Today was powder and they got lucky with snow all day instead of rain so conditions held for most of the day. The mountain needs longer runs, for its size. A lot of the blues are straight down, and although wide, are not very long. If they found away to get a cruiser trail around the mountain or a way to join all the summits together it would make the mountain seem more expansive and thus work the money they charge. Not bar or alcohol options due to being in a dry county.
