A ski resort's overall star rating displayed here is not calculated based on a simple average but takes several factors, including the age of a review, into account.
It may not be the biggest skiing in Michigan but I really like Schuss/Shanty. The snow is always in good shape. I've skied a lot of places in Michigan, Schuss and Nubs are my faves. (Cab and Highlands are fun too. Personally not a fan of Crystal/Main Street.) Obviously Schuss is smaller than Nubs but it has a great vibe. Very family friendly. Good terrain. Great staff. Bummer that COVID has taken apres ski away for now.

I use to love this Mountain. I learned to ski here. My husband and I bought year passes this year because we come here every year and normally enjoy ourselves. This year was a disappointment. I would give it one or two stars ifni was only rsting on this weekend. We have come four times so far and have not seen them make snow. Why are all of the snow machines in the parking lot I stead of on the hill? We went to Nubs Nob because Schuss was limiting lift tickets on Saturday and I am glad we went! The snow was great, service was great and they had heaters outside at Nubs Nob. So we came back Sunday as we had bought lift tickets in advance so they wouldn't be sold out. My friend needed to rent equipment so we picked up our tickets at the base of schuss and had to drive around the hill to rent her gear. We found out if was Sunday Funday which means you get lift ticket and rental gear for $33. She had already paid $54 for her lift ticket. They told her she still had to pay for rental gear. If we hadn't wasted so much time I wouldve asked to speak to the manager. I think this is our last year for Schuss.

We have skied Schuss for several seasons and i love the snow quality and grooming and gentle slopes. Fun to do with my daughter and husband. We dont ski but once a year and we love it. Love the tube park as well.

Well groomed runs with a lot variety. I particularly like the long rolling runs on either side of the mountain (has to be close to a mile long). Great entertainment at the Ivan bar, decent food. Nice pool indoor pool in main lodge. Whole family enjoyed the resort (we rented a condo in schuss village) very nice place had a fireplace and view of slope.

The ski rental, lodge, and bar area at the summit most all staff was very unfriendly and not very helpful! Very disappointed as we had new skiers with us as well! Defiately would not recommend this place and we will not be back!

Been an long time skier at Schuss Mtn. and want to share how appreciative our family is of the snow staff. They worked so hard to create the best skiing conditions for our two weeks visiting. Two specific examples include: After a day of rain, we skied the next day and they had used the evening cold temps to make enough snow to make for an amazing day of skiing the very next day. Another day we received 12 inches of snow overnight and they had groomed so well we had a great time the next day. Thanks to the staff.

After skiing at most of the larger northern Michigan ski areas for the past 40+ years, my sons, grandsons, and I thought it was time to try Schuss/Shanty Creek for a family ski weekend. We’re very glad we did! We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of trails (pitch, width, length, rolling, tree-lined, glades, etc.) and the number of quad chairs. It was fairly easy to find our way around. We have varied ability levels in our group but all could find something of interest that led us back to the same chair. The grooming was excellent and most of the chair lift operators were very attentive and friendly. There is a nice family-friendly ambiance that has us looking forward to our next visit!

The lift operators and everyone working in the lodge are super friendly here. Probably more so then anywhere else around Michigan I've been lately. The lodge is pretty nice inside and the food is actually reasonably priced. A burger, fries and drink came in under $10 for lunch. The actual skiing. This mountain is short. According to ski tracks at the end of the day only 368 feet which puts it about 20 feet taller then Pine Knob. There are several runs with some variety but nothing to set the place apart. The chair lifts are all slow so you feel like you are spending a lot of time just sitting on a chair if your at all used to skiing anywhere with high speed chairs. It is a 4 hour drive to get here from the Detroit area. There really is nothing here to justify the drive or hotel stay to ski this place. If you happen to live close by it's probably an okay occasional place. If you are coming more then an hour or 2 drive it feels like you drove a long way to ski something really no better then Pine Knob or Mt Holly.

I've been going here for decades and with the new owners pouring a ton of money into the resort I can honestly say that it's never been better. The skiing at Schuss is quality for the Midwest, although those accustomed to skiing the prime resorts in the West or East will not find it challenging. The amenities, new and old, are just as good as anything you'd find at a top resort in Utah or Colorado (and much more reasonably priced!), the restaurants and bars have improved tremendously both in quality of food/drinks and the variety of what they offer. The village of Bellaire offers a variety of options for the young and old and probably the best brewery in the state of Michigan (Short's) and a great bar for watching sports while downing a good burger (the Bellaire Bar). It's well worth the little time it takes to research the businesses in Bellaire because you will find some gems (check out the Bellaire Smokehouse) and to research the surrounding towns and villages (e.g. Charlevoix, Petoskey, Traverse City, etc.), wineries, breweries, restaurants, nature sites, shops, etc. if you want to get out on a day trip. While the the resort is probably best geared towards families and those looking for a more laid back, less physically demanding ski trip, there's something for just about everyone to justify a trip here during ski season.

Been coming here for several years. Snow was in best shape ever for early season skiing. Looked like it had adequate ski patrol and staffing.
