Tukino Skifield is located on the eastern slopes of Mt. Ruapehu in New Zealand’s North Island, offering a rugged alpine experience far from the bustle of commercial resorts. With a base elevation of 1,800 meters and a summit reaching 2,020 meters, the field spans 170 hectares (420 acres) and features 20 trails accessed by 3 surface lifts. The vertical drop of 220 meters delivers a compact but varied descent across natural terrain, with approximately 12 km of skiable distance and a longest run of 2 km.The trail breakdown includes 15% beginner, 25% intermediate, 30% advanced, and 30% expert terrain. Families will appreciate the welcoming club atmosphere, the learner-friendly slopes near the base, and the ability to stay slope-side in one of three alpine lodges. While there’s no gear rental on-site, nearby towns like Turangi and Ohakune offer equipment hire and supplies. Ski lessons are available on weekends, and cat-skiing adds an adventurous twist for those seeking deeper snow.Visitors choose Tukino for its raw alpine character, panoramic views of the Rangipo Desert, and the camaraderie of a club-operated field. Whether you're carving turns on groomed trails or hiking to untouched ridgelines, Tukino delivers a back-to-basics ski experience with a strong sense of community and a dramatic volcanic backdrop.
