Mt. Bachelor is situated within Deschutes National Forest, and only 22 miles outside of Bend, Oregon, which&nbsp;is home to many of the country's top craft breweries, tax-free shopping, 300 days of sunshine, and great apr&egrave;s-adventure.&nbsp;Mt. Bachelor ski area offers a modern lift infrastructure and updated amenities within 40 miles of nearby Redmond Municipal Airport. There are 12 direct flights into the area each day from major skier markets, while Mt. Bachelor is approximately&nbsp;115 miles south of Portland.
Campers take note that RV (with hookups) and van camping are allowed in the West Village base area in winter and summer.&nbsp;

The most convenient airport for reaching Mt. Bachelor is Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM), located about 30 miles northeast of Bend. From there, travelers can rent a car or use shuttle services like the Mt. Bachelor Shuttle, which operates daily during the ski season. For those coming from Portland, the drive takes roughly 3.5 hours via US-26 and OR-97, offering scenic views through the Deschutes National Forest.
Mt. Bachelor provides free parking at the West Village base area and offers complimentary shuttle service from Bend and Sunriver on weekends and holidays. Ride-sharing options are available locally, and the resort&rsquo;s layout makes it easy to access lifts directly from the parking lots. While there&rsquo;s no gondola or ski-in/ski-out lodging on-site, the resort&rsquo;s efficient lift system and proximity to town make getting on the mountain quick and hassle-free.

Mt. Bachelor&rsquo;s terrain is as diverse as it is expansive, with 4323 acres of skiable space and 122 trails that wrap around the volcanic cone. The mountain is divided into several key zones, each offering a unique experience. The front side features groomed cruisers and beginner-friendly trails, while the backside opens up to wide bowls and natural glades. From the summit, skiers can drop into 360 degrees of terrain, making it one of the few resorts in North America with such access.
Families and beginners will feel at home in the Sunrise and West Village areas, where gentle slopes like Home Run and Marshmallow provide a comfortable learning environment. These zones are served by surface lifts and slower chairs, making them ideal for first-timers. The resort also offers six tubing lanes and a dedicated progression park for younger riders.
Intermediate skiers will find a playground of blue trails across the mountain, especially off Pine Marten and Skyliner lifts. Runs like Thunderbird and Leeway offer long, flowing descents with consistent pitch and stunning views. These areas are perfect for building confidence and exploring more of the mountain without venturing into advanced terrain.
Advanced skiers can head to Outback and Northwest Express lifts, where trails like The Grotto and Wanoga Way deliver steeper pitches and natural features. Midweek mornings are golden&mdash;especially Wednesdays and Thursdays. You&rsquo;ll find fewer crowds and freshly groomed trails like Thunderbird and Leeway, which are perfect for carving at speed. Avoid weekends if you&rsquo;re looking for solitude, and aim for first chair to get the best conditions.

Families should check out the Sunrise Lodge area early in the day. It&rsquo;s less crowded than West Village and has easy access to beginner terrain like Marshmallow and Home Run. Plus, the tubing lanes are nearby, making it a great base for mixed-ability groups.
For apr&egrave;s-ski, head to Clearing Rock Bar at West Village. It&rsquo;s the resort&rsquo;s official spot for post-run drinks and snacks, with outdoor seating and fire pits. Try the local brews and grab a seat near the windows for sunset views over the Cascades.
Want to ride park features without the pressure? Visit the Flow Park near the Sunrise base. It&rsquo;s designed for progression, with mellow jumps and rails that are perfect for building confidence. The layout encourages creativity without the intimidation of larger parks.
If you&rsquo;re staying in Bend, take advantage of the Mt. Bachelor Shuttle. It&rsquo;s free on weekends and holidays, and drops you off right at the base. Parking can fill up fast, so this is a stress-free way to get on the mountain early.
On storm days, skip the summit and head to the lower lifts like Red Chair and Carrousel. Visibility is better, and the snow stacks up nicely in the trees. These areas are often overlooked but deliver great turns when the weather rolls in.
Finally, if you&rsquo;re looking for a unique experience, book a Snowblast Tubing session in the evening. The lanes are lit, the music is pumping, and it&rsquo;s a fun way to end the day with family or friends. It&rsquo;s one of Mt. Bachelor&rsquo;s most underrated activities&mdash;and a guaranteed laugh.
